February 25, 2011

What is Wobenzym?

Wobenzym is a product that is a mixture of enzymes. The specific formula was originally designed in Germany in the 1960s and gained popularity quickly as a natural treatmet for arthritis, as an anti-inflammatory and for numerous other health benefits.

What are enzymes?

Enzymes are a type of proteins composed of amino acids, the basic building blocks of life. All enzymes are proteins, but not all proteins are enzymes. Enzymes play a crucial role in almost all of the metabolic and physiological processes in the body. Basically, without enzymes your body would be unable to fulfill even the most basic functions and you would quickly die.

Enzymes play a key role in maintaining a healthy immune system, repairing damage in the body, metabolism, digestion, central nervous system function, hormonal balance, and much more.

Your body does produce its own supply of certain enzymes. However, enzyme supplies can be depleted in the body due to many factors including stress, oxidative damage, a poor diet, use of medications, and other factors.

Enzymes function as catalysts to these normal chemical reactions in the body that do everything from digest our food to repair damaged body tissues. Catalysts make these basic chemical reactions in the body work faster and smoother. When your body is depleted of certain enzymes, those natural body functions which rely on enzymes to occur no longer can occur properly. The body often has numerous “backup” mechanisms by which these reactions can occur, but these may take extra energy or take so long as to be ineffective and inefficient.

Lack of proper enzymes can lead to a variety of symptoms including fatigue, sleep problems, hormonal imbalances, a weakened immune system, poor digestion, constipation, and many others.

What does Wobenzym do?

Although the original use for Wobenzym was to treat osteoarthritis, studies have revealed numerous benefits of Wobenzym.

Studies have shown that Wobenzym lowers C-reactive protein levels (a marker of chronic infection in the body) by as much as 30%. The latest research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows that individuals with the highest levels of C-reactive protein have up to 6 times the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke as individuals with lower levels.

In addition, Wobenzym acts as a natural, safe and extremely effective alternative to anti-inflammatory drugs such as Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen which have harmful side effects and cause thousands of deaths a year due to overdose.

Many Olympic athletes and Olympic teams use Wobenzym to reduce injuries by as much as 50% and to enhance healing after injury. This is partly due to the bioflavonoids ability to prevent the discoloration and local pain associated with traumatic injuries. For these same reasons, numerous surgeons from across the world now routinely prescribe Wobenzym to prevent bruising and edema and the associated pain for their post-surgical patients.

As I’ve written previously, Wobenzym is an excellent supplement to take pre-operative and post-operative for wisdom tooth surgery. Many patients have found that taking Wobenzym a few days before surgery and after surgery can reduce swelling dramatically and in some cases completely!

So far, scientists have found numerous benefits of taking Wobenzym including:

  • Reducing swelling and edema from surgery and other wounds
  • Reducing the incidence of blood clots
  • Reducing the incidence of heart attacks and strokes because of its anti-thrombotic, anti-spasmodic, anti-arrhythmic and cholesterol lowering abilities.
  • Reducing oxidative stress
  • Improving elimination of toxins from the body
  • Treating autoimmune and rheumatic illnesses, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Alleviating joint and muscle pain and repairing soft tissue damage
  • Benefiting viral injection treatments for herpes, cancer and Hepatitis C
  • Reduced inflammation and symptoms for allergy patients

How does Wobenzym work?

Wobenzym works as all enzymes do, by functioning as a catalyst in normal body reactions. As of now, scientists still understand these reactions only to a very limited degree.

What we do know is that your body was designed to heal and repair itself. You were meant to be healthy and well, not sick and feeble. Enzymes appear to play a crucial well in many of the body’s natural processes which help itself heal and repair damage from a variety of internal and external factors.

As of now, the research on Wobenyzm is most compelling in its anti-inflammatory properties. Since over 85% of Americans suffer from some kind of inflammatory condition such as arthritis, obesity, allergies, asthma, autoimmune disorders, cancer, heart disease, and so on, it stands to show that most if not all Americans could benefit from supplementing with Wobenzym.

In patients who may be undergoing surgery soon or who have recently undergone surgery, Wobenzym has been shown to dramatically reduce swelling and other complications from surgery. It would be a shame for someone to undergo surgery without Wobenyzm as its benefits are so dramatic and potentiall life-saving.

How much Wobenzym should you take?

The common dose for Wobenzym is 3 to 5 tablets taken two times a day.

Ideally Wobenzym should be taken at least 30 minutes before meals or 60 minutes after meals. The reason for this is that the enzymes in Wobenzym will be used for digestion in the stomach if you’re body is working on digesting food rather than going to the more intended purpose of reducing inflammation in other parts of the body.

Most people find the best time to take Wobenzym is just after getting up in the morning or right before bed.

Wobenzym contains systemic enzymes, which split other proteins and break them down into smaller chains of amino acids. The body uses these naturally-occurring enzymes like a biological ‘vacuum cleaner’ to rid the blood of circulating immune complexes and other harmful proteins that can lodge in joints or cause other health problems.Original (Red) Wobenzym: The Wobenzym tablets sold in Germany are also available here.
