Natural IBS and Crohn’s Treatments

How to naturally treat IBS, Crohn’s, and other digestive disorders

IBS and other digestive disorders have become much too common today. Researchers estimate that 15% of Americans suffer from IBS. And many more have other digestive disorders such as Crohn’s disease, heartburn, acid reflux, celiac disease, chronic constipation, diverticulosis and diverticulitis and more!

These various digestive disorders range from mildly irritating to extremely painful and disruptive.

What most people don’t know is that over 70% of the immune system is in the gut and digestive tracts! This means that if there is a disorder in your digestive system, there is a disorder with your immune system. Their function is so interconnected that a disturbance in the immune system naturally causes a disturbance in the digestive system and vice versa.

Why is so much of the immune system located in the digestive system?

Well, the major way that foreign substances enter into our body is through the digestive system. Our skin protects the rest of our body from intrusions by foreign substances, but everything we eat goes through our digestive system and therefore has the potential to enter into our bodies via the digestive tract.

Our immune systems must constantly be working to keep dangerous substances such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins out of our bodies. This puts an enormous amount of pressure on the immune system to protect the digestive system.

Because the digestive system and immune system are both so interconnected, an imbalance in one system can quickly cause an imbalance and damage in the other system.

This is why we are seeing such massive increases in digestive disorders like IBS, Crohn’s, celiac, heartburn, acid reflux, chronic constipation, diverticulosis, diverticulitis and others.

Treating these disorders naturally must invariably include treating the immune system naturally. In patients with IBS and other chronic disorders, the immune system becomes overworked and overly inflammatory. This inflammation is what leads to IBS and other disorders.

What to Eat for IBS and other Digestive Disorders

To treat IBS and other digestive disorders, we must treat the immune system and feed our bodies anti-inflammatory whole foods such as:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Berries
  • Whole Grains
  • Beans and Legumes
  • Omega-3 fats

Also, supplementing with Vitamin D3 has been shown to be very helpful in balancing the immune system and protecting our body from numerous digestive disorders. Read more about Vitamin D3 here.

Now, for some people with IBS or diverticulitis or other disorders, it may be very hard if not impossible to eat various fruits, vegetables, grains, or beans. That’s ok. Eat the best you can without damaging your body.

One thing you can do if you cannot eat the whole fruits and vegetables is to juice them. Juicing the produce will eliminate the fiber and basically predigests the fruits and vegetables – this makes is much easier for the body to absorb these vital nutrients that are anti-inflammatory.

For those who do not like the hassle and time it takes to juice fruits and vegetables, you can buy a concentrated fruit and vegetables juice powder concentrate that comes in capsules or gummies for children (Buy Juice Plus+).This will help you get all the antioxidants and phytonutrients from the fruits and vegetables without the trouble of having to digest them for those with sensitive digestive systems.

What Foods to Avoid for IBS and other Digestive Disorders

For those with IBS and other digestive disorders, it is imperative you avoid or limit as much as possible your intake of the following foods:

1. Avoid Processed Foods

Processed foods such as twinkies, cookies, crackers, chips, and others have been highly cooked and processed in such a way that all the enzymes and many of the nutrients are inactivated or destroyed. What this means is that these are inert foods. Inert foods have little or no nutritional value and cause severe strain on your digestive system and immune system.

These foods have been shown to cause constipation and various other disorders. If you have IBS or other digestive disorders, it is imperative you avoid eating processed foods. They will only make your digestive system even more unhappy and stressed.

Many people have found that simply eliminating processed foods dramatically helped improve their digestive disorders because their bodies no longer had to deal with the strain of digesting inert foods.

2. Avoid Refined Carbohydrates (sugar, white bread, white flour)

Refined carbohydrates are also processed foods. But they are some of the worst kind! Avoid at all costs white sugar, white flour, white bread, white pasta, and other white refined carbohydrates. They are inert foods and cause serious strain to your digestive and immune systems.

3. Avoid Milk and Dairy products

Milk and dairy products contain a protein called casein. Casein has been shown to be very inflammatory and causes the body to create extra mucus. This inflammation and mucus damages your digestive and immune systems. Many people have found that simply avoiding dairy products dramatically helped improve their digestive disorders.

Don’t believe me? Try not eating any dairy products for just a week, just 7 days, and see what happens! Most people are amazed at how much better they feel.

4. Avoid Meat, Fish and other animal products

Meat, fish, and other animal products are hard to digest. It takes a lot of energy for our digestive systems to handle these foods. That energy could be much better used for healing.

Furthermore, these foods are all inflammatory. Remember, we want to stop inflammation by eating anti-inflammatory foods. Eating too much meat and animal products has been linked to various digestive disorders such as colon cancer and IBS. Avoid animal products as much as you can until your body has time to heal and recover.
