Cancer Fighting Foods for Health

Here’s the truth – the cancer industry is lying to you. The pharmaceutical industry is lying to you. The food industry is lying to you.

They keep telling you, “We’re researching the next big cancer drug that’s going to eliminate cancer forever!” – BULLSHIT! There is never going to be a drug that will cure cancer. Why? Because cancer is a HUMAN disease of the human body. When you have cancer, your cells literally grow out of control until they kill you. The only “cure” to cancer is the human immune system – it’s been designed to kill cancer cells. If you feed your body what it needs to build a healthy, strong, balanced immune system and stop feeding your body the toxins, poisons and carcinogens, the cancer cells will be killed off quickly, easily, and readily by your immune system.

It’s been well documented that people develop cancer cells numerous times in their life, yet the body naturally kills these cancer cells before they can get out of control. When the immune system is imbalanced and underperforming due to toxins, carcinogens, poor diet and stress, the immune system doesn’t kill the cancer cells fast enough – they grow and multiply and can eventually lead to a severe cancer diagnosis. The answer is not more drugs or better drugs – the answer is better nutrition and a healthier immune system.

There are so many excellent whole foods out there that can dramatically reduce your risk for cancer and even help reverse cancer once you have it.

But first of all, let’s talk about some things to avoid which can be harmful and increase you risk for cancer or promote cancer growth.

Cancer Causing Foods to Avoid

There are many chemicals in our modern food supply such as pesticides, fillers, food dyes, and nitrates which have been shown to increase cancer risk and promote cancer growth in some cases. Make sure you wash wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly if they are conventional. Even better, stick to buying organic produce.

You’ll also want to only eat whole grains (no refined grains or refined sugars), cut out all processed meats, dyes, sugars, and artificial ingredients from your diet. If you are not near a health food store or food coop, you might want to find a service that delivers organic food to your home or office. Companies like Urban Organic or Organic Express can help you out with that.

Cancer Fighting Foods

Now that we know what to avoid, here are just a few of the cancer-fighting foods that researchers have discovered:

1. Red Grapes

Red grapes contain resveratrol in the grape skins, a phytoalexin, and other potent anti-cancer chemicals. Grape seeds contain pycnogenol, which has been shown to have anti-cancer properties, so if you can, chew the grape seeds them rather than spitting them out.

2. Broccoli

Most of us know by now that broccoli is a powerful anti-cancer food. It contains indoles, including sulfurophane, an isothiocyanate that helps block breast tumors. So tell your kids to eat their broccoli!

3. Mushrooms

Shitake, maitake, tree ears, oysters, and other mushrooms contain anti-cancer lectins and should be added to your diet to help greatly reduce your risk for cancer.

4. Citrus Fruits

Eating citrus fruits, including the peel, will help boost your cancer fighting ability. They contain chemicals called monoterpenes, such as d-limonene. Citrus fruits help prevent breast, liver and lung cancer. Try kumquats which are delicious and can be eating whole including the rind.

A food supplement called Modified Citrus Pectin can help as a treatment for stopping metastases in prostate and other kinds of cancer (J Natl Cancer Inst. 2002;94:1854-1862).

However, citrus fruits should be avoided if you are currently taking the drug tamoxifen. For reasons unknown, the flavonoid tangeretin (present in some supplements and in citrus peel) may interfere with the action of that drug, at least in animals (J Natl Cancer Inst 1999;91:354-359).

5. Garlic

Garlic is an allium vegetable. Allium vegetables contain organosulfur compounds and have many health benefits, including inhibiting cancer. Garlic also contains selenium, which can block early stage breast cancer (note you cannot get the same benefit from taking selenium supplements).

6. Nuts

Almonds and especially almond extracts contain benzaldehyde, shown in Japanese clinical studies to exert an anti-cancer effect. Brazil nuts are in the news too after animal studies found brazil nuts to be more protective against cancer than pure selenium selenite. They also contain ellagic acid (which is found in red raspberries to completely kill cancer cells in test tubes), which may remove or block cancer causing toxins.

6. Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant with strong anti-cancer effects. For better absorption of lycopene, remember that they must be eaten with a small amount of healthy fats.

7. Green Tea

Green tea contains catechins such as EGCG as well as other anti-cancer bioflavonoids. Decaffeinated green tea is available, and makes an excellent healthy drink. If you have a coffee or black tea habit, try replacing them with green tea.

Also, remember that if you don’t boil the tea then none of the caffeine is released. So if you put green tea in smoothies, you get all the great nutrient benefits without any of the caffeine!

Other Cancer Fighting Foods

Although we’ve only talked about a handful of cancer fighting foods here, I hope you realize one common trait in all of them:

The foods that fight cancer are all whole foods. Whole fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms. You won’t find any processed foods on a cancer fighting food list, because they simply don’t contain the more than 10,000 natural phytonutrients, antioxidants, endophytes, and other nutrients found in whole foods.

Remember, the more whole foods you eat, the lower your risk of cancer and other diseases will be. Enjoy!
